Fran Cooper Reads These Dividing Walls!

The lovely author Fran Cooper visited our office to read her Paris-set debut book These Dividing Walls. Cheese snacks were provided as the perfect accompaniment. Her book published on the 4th May.

About the book:

One Parisian summer
A building of separate lives
All that divides them will soon collapse…

In a forgotten corner of Paris stands a building.

Within its walls, people talk and kiss, laugh and cry; some are glad to sit alone, while others wish they did not. A woman with silver-blonde hair opens her bookshop downstairs, an old man feeds the sparrows on his windowsill, and a young mother wills the morning to hold itself at bay. Though each of their walls touches someone else’s, the neighbours they pass in the courtyard remain strangers.

Into this courtyard arrives Edward. Still bearing the sweat of a channel crossing, he takes his place in an attic room to wait out his grief.

But in distant corners of the city, as Paris is pulled taut with summer heat, there are those who meet with a darker purpose. As the feverish metropolis is brought to boiling point, secrets will rise and walls will crumble both within and without Number 37…

The High Places, Fiona McFarlane

Both the design and illustration are done by me. This is a collection of literary short stories by Fiona McFarlane, author of The Night Guest. I wanted to keep a limited colour palette with this graphic and geometric inspired approach.

When the Floods Came, Clare Morrall

I designed When the Floods Came (hardback, trade paperback and ebook). This is an atmospheric literary book with a hint of a thriller. The beautifully detailed illustration of the foliage engulfing the tower block is by Claire Scully. The finished book will have gold foil amongst the leaves as well as the typography.

About the book:

A gripping and vividly imagined novel set in the late 21st century, when climate change means summers are very hot, spring and autumn brief and winter brings floods and snow. 20 years earlier a deadly virus wiped out most of the UK’s population and all the major cities have been sealed up. The Polanski family – Nikolai and Bess, their 3 daughters and one son – are lucky: not only immune to the virus but, unlike many, still fertile. Most other survivors live in the capital, Brighton, but they have stayed on alone in their tower block outside Birmingham, living off their own produce and the occasional supply drop, staying in contact with others via the net. But just when 22-year-old Roza is preparing for the arrival of the fiancé she has met online, a stranger arrives: charming, friendly, mysterious Aashay. They can’t decide whether to trust him – and in the end it turns out he was even more dangerous than they suspected.
